Flu, COVID-19 and Respiratory Infections in Brazil

Rio Med Care provides consultations in English, by secure video, throughout Brazil. This page is general information and does not replace an individual medical evaluation.

Respiratory infections spread easily during travel: long flights, crowded transport, air conditioning and a change of climate all contribute. Most are viral and improve on their own, but it is not always obvious when a cough deserves more attention.

An evaluation in English clarifies what you likely have, whether testing is worthwhile, what you can safely take, and whether you are fit to fly or need to postpone travel.

    Common symptoms

    • Sore throat, cough, hoarseness
    • Nasal congestion or discharge, facial pressure
    • Fever, chills, body aches
    • Fatigue and headache
    • Loss of smell or taste

When to seek medical care urgently

    • Shortness of breath or difficulty speaking full sentences
    • Chest pain
    • Fever persisting beyond five days or returning after improvement
    • Bluish lips, confusion or severe drowsiness
    • Any breathing difficulty in a child or an older adult

In an emergency in Brazil, call 192 (SAMU) or go to the nearest emergency department. Telemedicine is not appropriate for severe or rapidly evolving conditions.

    What the consultation includes

    • History and symptom review, including underlying conditions and vaccination status.
    • Guidance on testing (COVID-19, influenza) when it will change management.
    • Symptom-relief advice and a realistic recovery timeline.
    • A medical certificate or prescription when clinically indicated after the evaluation, and referral for in-person examination if your chest needs to be listened to.

Prescriptions and medical certificates are issued only when clinically indicated after a live medical evaluation. Rio Med Care does not sell or deliver medications.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I get a medical certificate for work or my airline?

A medical certificate can be issued during the consultation when it is clinically justified by the evaluation.

Do I need antibiotics for a cough?

Most respiratory infections are viral and antibiotics do not help. They are prescribed only when the clinical evaluation indicates a bacterial infection.

    Should I cancel my flight?

That depends on your symptoms and any underlying conditions. It is one of the practical questions the consultation is designed to answer.
